Do Solar Batteries Make Sense in Andhra Pradesh? An Honest Answer

We sell batteries. We are also going to tell you that in Andhra Pradesh they do not pay for themselves, because you will work it out eventually and we would rather you heard it from us.
The arithmetic
A 5 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery costs around ₹1,00,000 for the pack alone. Add the hybrid inverter it requires and the installation, and you are looking at roughly ₹1.8 to ₹2.2 lakh on top of your solar system — close to doubling the cost of a typical 3 kW installation.
Spread that over the warranty life and the number of charge cycles you will realistically get, and each unit of electricity that passes through the battery costs somewhere between ₹8 and ₹16.
Your marginal grid tariff in Andhra Pradesh is ₹8.75 per unit.
So in the best case the battery roughly breaks even against the grid, and in the likely case it loses. There is no arbitrage to capture.
Why the economics are worse here than elsewhere
Three things stack against battery payback in Andhra Pradesh:
Full monthly net metering. You already get kilowatt-hour-for-kilowatt-hour credit banked across the whole billing month. The grid is functioning as a free, perfectly efficient battery. A physical battery cannot compete with a free one.
No domestic time-of-day tariff. In markets where electricity costs more in the evening peak, a battery earns money by shifting consumption. Andhra Pradesh applies time-of-day pricing only to commercial and industrial consumers. There is no peak rate for a household to arbitrage against.
Tariffs are not rising. APERC held residential tariffs unchanged for FY2026-27. The usual argument for storage — that electricity will only get dearer — is weaker here than almost anywhere in India.
When a battery is worth buying
All of that said, there are good reasons to buy one. They are just not financial.
Outage protection. Coastal Andhra sits in a cyclone belt with a monsoon season. If your work, your health or your business depends on power staying on, a battery buys reliability. That has real value — it is simply not the same thing as savings.
Replacing a diesel generator. Against a generator, a battery wins comfortably on running cost, noise, fumes and maintenance.
Replacing lead-acid inverter batteries. This is the strongest case of all. If you already replace tubular batteries every three or four years, lithium iron phosphate is at or below lead-acid on lifecycle cost, with a five-year warranty and eight to ten years of realistic life. Coastal heat and humidity are especially hard on lead-acid. If you are already buying batteries, buying better ones is straightforwardly sensible.
What would change our answer
Two things. If Andhra Pradesh introduces domestic time-of-day tariffs alongside smart meters — plausible within a few years — battery economics flip overnight. And if the subsidy scheme is revised to cover storage, the arithmetic changes immediately.
We watch both. When either happens, we will tell you.
The bottom line
Buy a battery for reliability. Buy lithium instead of lead-acid because it is genuinely cheaper over its life. Do not buy a battery because someone showed you a payback calculation — in Andhra Pradesh today, that calculation does not hold.
